White Spot Restaurant: Perfect for kids, fun for adults

Sep 22 , 2011

White Spot restaurants have been satisfying Vancouver’s burger cravings since 1928. Growing from a lunch counter run by Nat Bailey, the chain has expanded to a mix of drive-in, casual family, and Triple-O’s fast food locations. The restaurants also serve Nat Bailey Pale Ale and Pirate Paks for kids.

History of Nat Bailey's White Spot

Nat Bailey started White Spot by selling lunch items from his Model T at Vancouver's Lookout Point. Bailey opened the first restaurant location of White Spot in 1928, near the south end of Granville Street, and gradually expanded the drive-in restaurants to make White Spot the most successful local restaurant chain.

Today, the history of Nat Bailey and White Spot is fully embraced by Vancouver. Granville Island Brewery crafts Nat Bailey Pale Ale and a Nat Bailey Lager, which are available on-tap at White Spot locations, while the minor-league Vancouver Canadians baseball team plays in a stadium named for the restaurateur.

Dining at White Spot or Triple-O's

White Spot offers varied dining experiences, from its family-style restaurants to more fast-food locations called Triple-O's. But at all the locations, it's the White Spot burgers that endure as a favorite menu item. Various White Spot burgers range from chicken to beef to vegetarian. The sandwiches are served with hand cut fries. White Spot tends to emphasize local products—such as using Canadian beef in its burgers. At the casual-dining restaurants, selections of pastas and salads round out the menu.

White Spot Pirate Paks for Kids

Introduced in 1968, Pirate Paks have become a White Spot institution for kids and adults. The restaurant serves the Pirate Paks as their kids' meal. With a sandwich, drink, and fries, Pirate Paks arrive served in a cardboard pirate ship. Plus there's a scoop of ice cream and gold chocolate coin for dessert.

Available only to kids 10 and under, once per year White Spot offers Pirate Paks to all customers as a charity fundraiser.

White Spot Vancouver Locations

There are White Spot locations in many Vancouver neighborhoods and further afield in Alberta and Hong Kong. Close to downtown, visit the casual-dining restaurant at Seymour and West Georgia streets. Or, grab takeout from the White Spot Triple-O's on Cornwall Avenue and head to nearby Kitsilano Beach. For the White Spot drive-in experience, visit the restaurant location at 2518 West Broadway. There are also locations in the domestic terminal of Vancouver International Airport and on some BC Ferries vessels.

Despite Vancouver's love of sushi and fine dining, the Vancouverites still seem to love their meals of burgers, fries, and milkshakes. For more Vancouver restaurants, discover the city's best dining and find a sample of the diverse restaurant options.
