Feb 11 , 2011
If you came to Vancouver for some art and history, you came to the right place. Vancouver museums offer an array of culture, history, and creativity. Learn about the five best options available.
Although famous for many things, Vancouver boasts some of the best museums in the northwest. If you're here on vacation or just looking for something to do for the day, check out some of the culture, art and history by strolling through one of the many museums in Vancouver.
Museum of Anthropology
Better known as the MOA, the Museum of Anthropology has exhibits the span a range from historic art to heritage. Some of its most well-known exhibits include the Welcome Figures and Carved Doors, Carved works from the Coast Salish communities and other local cultural art, all of which are permanent to the museum, as well as many short-term and temporary exhibits that embody world culture and art.
The MOA is closed on Mondays, but has regular business hours throughout the week.
Vancouver Maritime Museum
One of the most famous of the Vancouver museums, the Maritime museum includes exhibits on maritime history, sea faring vessels and pirates, including a search for buried treasure. Also available through the maritime museum is the Children's Maritime Discovery Center—a place for kids to learn the history of the ocean and its travelers.
H.R. MacMillan Space Centre
Out of the ocean and into the stars, the Space Center is a great educational experience for anyone. As well as daily admissions, it is also available for school field trips and group tours. Learn about space history, human involvement and anything else space related you can think of. I would highly recommend doing a tour as the guides are knowledgeable and can help make your trip as fun as possible while still squeezing every drop of learning out of it.
Museum of Vancouver
If you're interested in learning about the history of the city, itself, this is the place to go. Located in Vanier Park, the museum doesn't just focus on the history of the city. The museum of Vancouver is focused on creating a dynamic environment to learn about the city's heritage, but also the current and possible future events of Vancouver. This is definitely a place to check out if you've recently moved to the area.
Science World
By using a more hands-on approach to science, learning about physics, light, electricity and much more is fun at Science World in Vancouver. If you have kids, take them here to learn about going green and the benefits of environmental awareness. You can check out what's playing at the Omnimax theater and learn something new from a huge, surround screen. Definitely more fun than a science class, Science World is sure to entertain and educate.
With all these fun and educational museums, you should have no trouble finding something productive to fill your days at some of the museums in Vancouver.
