Polar Bear Swim Club
Since 1920, people have been gathering at English Bay to plunge into the frigid water. The Vancouver Polar Bear Swim Club started with just ten members and has grown to over 2,000 people.
The Polar Bear Swim Club has become a tradition on January 1st in English Bay. It is a free event where many will gather to swim in cold water. Registration takes place in front of the English Bathhouse from 12:30 pm-2: 30 pm. Some events that take place are a 100-yard memorial swim race, 300-yard swim dash around the pier, and a costume contest. The water temperature averages 6 degrees Celsius (43 degrees Fahrenheit).
When you come to watch or participate in the polar bear dip you will see a wide range of ages from the participants. There has even been a lady of 92, Ivy has become known as the Queen of Polar Bears and started in 1928. Unfortunately she has now passed, but she is honored every year by 3 policewomen who take the plunge.
