Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival

Since 1989, this international Dragon Boat Festival has brought cultural diversity and an athletic art to the Vancouver community. More than 180 boats will race this year on the False Creek waters from June 15-17. In addition to watching the race, entertainment like the World Beat Stage performers and the Granville Island Brewing Beer Garden will be available for audiences’ enjoyment as well.

The Dragon Boat Festival begins with an eye dotting blessing ceremony. To honor the Chinese tradition of eye dotting, priests and members of the Taoist Church cleanse the racecourse and make offerings. The priests proceed to paint dots under the eyes on the dragon boat’s heads, which is meant to awaken the beast. Afterwards, racers take off and onlookers are free to roam the festival.

Admission to the festival is free and festivities begin on June 15 at 2 p.m. Races begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and will be sure to be a thrilling sight. Festival grounds are easily accessible by SkyTrain, bus, or bike, and are conveniently located just a one minute walk from Main Street. Come out and watch the largest dragon boat festival in North America.
